More people need to understand the health ramifications of a sedentary lifestyle. Not only will it lead to disease and a shorter lifespan, but the added costs to our healthcare system as a result are crippling Maryland’s economy.

Please send a letter to the editor of any publication urging your fellow Marylanders to get healthy and encouraging government to do its part by providing a tax incentive.

Identify your local paper, and compose a letter: Below are some talking points to help you:

  • In 2003 an estimated $1.5 billion of adult medical expenditures were attributed to obesity in Maryland.
  • Maryland’s per capita cost for obesity is higher than that of the nation’s.
  • Due to the obesity epidemic, 1 in 3 Maryland babies born in 2001 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.
  • The obesity epidemic and its resulting diseases are preventable and solvable.
  • The only real solution to our healthcare crisis is prevention.
  • The Trust for America’s Health (TFAH) concludes that an investment equivalent to $10 per person per year in proven community-based programs to increase physical activity and improve nutrition could save Maryland more that $387,000,000 annually within 5 years. This return is projected at $5.60 for every $1 invested in just 3-5 years..

"We need this! And tax benefits have been successful for encouraging other good activities in the past!"

Joan Dunne,
"I fully agree with the tax incentives for healthy lifestyles. I also think that physical education be promoted at the k thru 12 level. We I was in school I believe we had phys ed at least three and maybe four times a year. There should also be more incentives for business. I retired three years ago, and I know how detrimental it can be to sit behind a desk all day with no physical activity. For a number of years I worked full time, had a husband and two children, and took two courses in the evening. My weight soared and I tried to manage everything. Even though I worked on a college campus where there was a wellness center, I really didn't have the time to fit it in. I wish I had a realistic recommendation for this problem, but with the economy what it is today, I see no solution. The incentives you have listed would certainly go along way in promoting a healthy population, and should curtail the spiraling health cost."
